Borshch is a magazine for electronic music on and beyond the dancefloor. It’s a space to provoke open dialogues and challenge established ideas about making, listening, and dancing to music. We started the magazine together with the Portuguese art director Tiago Biscaia in 2017 in Berlin to foster a discussion about the artistic, social, and political impact of electronic music on contemporary culture in and outside the club settings. We've released six biannual print editions and expanded our content and community through digital formats, mix series, launch events, and collaborations with music festivals.
Jeff Mills took on the editor's role for the Leap Forward issue (2018) to discuss the future of electronic music by engaging with his collaborators from diverse disciplines such as cinema, dance, poetry, and space science. This edition also incorporated Mills' own ideas, which are reflected in his extensive discography and numerous artistic projects. George Nebieridze took photos of Jeff Mills in several locations in Berlin, reflecting Mills' futuristic vision.
The six editions featured conversations and photo shoots with artists such as Lanark Artefax, Lyra Pramuk, Nazar, Hiro Kone, Bill Kouligas, Amnesia Scanner, Farwarmth, Helena Hauff, Racin, Deena Abdelwahed, Lucrecia Dalt, Alessandro Adriani, Animistic Beliefs, Rrose, Klein, Ziúr Rrose, Aïsha Devi, Object Blue, Prequel Tapes, Iron Sight, Marie Davidson, Dasha Rush, Volruptus, Gudrun Gut, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, among others.
Each print issue was dedicated to exploring specific themes within music and club culture, such as the perception of 'dark sound' and the music of discomfort, the interplay of light and darkness on the dancefloor, the sense of revolt manifested in communities and the DIY culture, the transformative power of music and its ability to heal, the importance of mental health, and the prevalence of destructive behaviors in the industry.
